How It Works

Pregnancy tests detect HCG hormone in urine. Accuracy depends on when implantation occurred and how much HCG has accumulated. Testing too early gives false negatives.

The Formula

Test Day = Implantation Day + Sensitivity Delay

HCG doubles every ~48 hours, reaching detectable levels 2-5 days after implantation

Variables

  • mIU/mL โ€” Milli-international units per milliliter โ€” HCG concentration unit
  • DPO โ€” Days Past Ovulation

Worked Example

Ovulation Day 14, implantation Day 23, standard test: earliest Day 27, reliable Day 30 (2 days after missed period).

Practical Tips

  • First morning urine gives the highest HCG concentration and most accurate results.
  • A negative test before your missed period does not mean you are not pregnant.
  • Early detection tests can work 4-5 days before your expected period.
  • After IVF, wait at least 9-11 days post-transfer to avoid trigger shot false positives.
  • If the test is negative but your period does not start, retest in 2-3 days.
