How It Works

Implantation occurs 6-12 days after ovulation (most commonly day 8-10). After IVF transfer, timing depends on embryo development stage at transfer.

The Formula

Natural: Implantation = Ovulation Day + 6 to 12 days (peak at 8-10)

IVF Day 5: Implantation = Transfer + 1 to 5 days

Variables

  • DPO — Days Past Ovulation — standard tracking unit after ovulation
  • HCG — Human Chorionic Gonadotropin — pregnancy hormone produced after implantation

Worked Example

Ovulation on Day 14: Most likely implantation Day 22-23. Blood test positive by Day 26-27. Home test reliable by Day 28-29.

Practical Tips

  • Implantation bleeding (light spotting) occurs in about 25% of pregnancies.
  • HCG doubles every 48-72 hours after implantation.
  • Testing too early leads to false negatives — wait until expected period or later.
  • After IVF, HCG can be detected earlier because implantation timing is more precise.
  • Implantation cramps are mild — sharp or severe pain warrants medical attention.
